In the Jewish community, they perform gay marriages. They have been doing this since like the 60s. So my uncle was married to a man in a synagogue years before gay marriage was legalised. He married when I was like 12. The thing is, Jews are marginalised, so they'll just ignore civil law if they feel like it. So the way I grew up, Jewish gay marriage law was respected over civil "gay marriage isn't legal" law. Jews didn't recognise civil laws regarding gay marriage tbh. This is the way I was raised. And because the Jewish community is very insular, I was never exposed to the idea that my uncles' marriage might not be recognised under civil law. My uncles both wore rings, everyone in my family and the community called them married. And I never thought that much about it. Anyway. Fast forward to my first year of university. My flatmate mentions to me, "Gay marriage is becoming legalised." Having grown up believing that my uncle was legally married to a dude, I responded, "What the **** are you talking about?" Everyone looked at me like was retarded. It was so obvious I thought gay marriage was legal, my flatmates all laughed at me like I was an idiot. I went home to ask my parents about all of this and they were just like, bro it's a marriage to us that's what matters THE JEWS HAVE SPOKEN. Anyways this was literally my version of discovering Santa isn't real tbh
